Ann Arbor Area Community Tennis Association (AAACTA) is hosting the 100th anniversary of the Ann Arbor City Tennis Tournament.
The tournament spans three weekends each summer and is free to spectators. The Adult Mixed Doubles Tournament was June 6-9. The Adult Singles Tournament was June 19-23. The Adult Doubles Tournament is July 10-14 and the Junior Tournament is July 11 & 12. All matches are played at the Varsity Tennis Center.
The annual event wraps up with a Town Tennis Celebration on July 14, where they will serve food donated by the Olive Garden, have a Hit & HIIT clinic for adults with Dominika Wozniak from FitPoint, and a kids’ clinic run by the USTA plus the finals matches of the Doubles Tournament.
The tournament was first held in 1919 and played at West Park. The first women’s event was added in 1922. The tournament became a truly annual event in 1955.
Rollin Baker’s win in the Men’s Open division was particularly impressive. He beat Erik Bruley in the first round, who won the Men’s 4.5 in 2016. Then, he took down three former champs of the top men’s singles division: Bill Godfrey (1981, 1989, 1998), Sven Holcombe (2008, 2009, 2010, 2014, 2016, 2017), and Mats Ljungman (1995, 1996, 2004, 2011). The last three men have also won numerous men’s doubles and mixed doubles titles over the years.
