Two elite programs, not to mention city rivals, met for a pool party on Thursday night at Skyline High School. The visiting Pioneers flexed their top-ranked in the state muscles and swam past the Eagles 119-67 in an SEC dual-meet.
The teams always seem to bring out the best in one another and this meet was no different. There were some close races and excellent performances from both of these talented teams.
Pioneer went one-two in the opening medley relay – just to make a statement that this was game on. The team of Quoia Sam, Edwina Jalet, Sophia Guo and Autumn Bullinger touched first 1:50.13. The team of Holly Pringle, Amelia Weyhing, Hanna Kharchenko and Lucy Mehraban were second in 1:50.15.
In the 200 free, Pioneer’s Vivian VanRenterghem was first in 1:53.38. Skyline’s Lily Cleason was a close second in 1:54.05 and teammate Allison Haak was right there at 1:55.55 to take third. Pioneer’s Lily Cramer was fourth (1:56.0).
The Pioneers dominated the 200 IM with Guo (first, 2:14.8), Bullinger (second, 2:15.3) and Kharchenko (third, 2:26.27). Skyline’s Ella Enrique-Shakespeare was fourth (2:26.28) – yeah, that was a close finish for third.
In the 50 free, Pioneer’s Mehraban was first in 24.15. Skyline’s Claire Kozma took a close second in 25.0 while Pioneer’s Weyhing was third (25.38) and Skyline’s Madison Deininger was fourth (25.96).
Pioneer dominated the diving with Alex Mercier first (211.95), Tierney Fraidenburg second (200.20), Sefina Patterson third (194.95) and Jordan Marion fourth (176.10).
Kozma won the 100 butterfly for the Eagles with a time of 58.74. Pioneer went two-three with Guo (1:00.54) and Jeannie Liu (1:05.22).
The Pioneers took the top two spots in the 100 free with Mehraban first (52.50) and Weyhing second (55.10). Skyline’s Deininger was third (55.43).
Cramer touched first for the Pioneers in the 500 free with a time of 5:09.45, just beating out Skyline’s Gina Sadler (5:10.64). Allison Haak was third for Skyline (5:11.22) and she just out-touched Pioneer’s VanRenterghem (5:11.31).
In the 200 free relay, Pioneer’s team of Lindsay Orringer-Hau, Jalet, Piper Campbell and VanRenterghem won in 1:44.77. Skyline’s team of Aly Guevara, Alia Tracy, Angela Noble and Haak was a very close second in 1:44.91.
In another very close finish, Cleason won the backstroke in 59.10 with Sam touching second in 59.95. Orringer-Hau was third for the Pioneers in 1:00.06.
Jalet finished first in the breaststroke with a time of 1:07.85. Skyline’s Emma Pettigrew was second (1:09.04) and teammate Alison Lock was third (1:12.95) Pioneer’s Eva Woods was fourth in 1:13.09.
In the 400 free relay, Pioneer’s team of Cramer, Weyhing, Pringle and VanRenterghem won in 3:34.98. Skyline’s team of Kozma, Cleason, Deininger and Haak (all four classes represented) took second in 3:41.56.
