Girls Basketball: Pioneer’s strong play inside too much for Skyline (WLAA photogallery)

Alexis Clark got the Pioneers rolling in the right direction and the host Skyline Eagles just couldn’t turn things around in a matchup of city rivals on Tuesday night. Clark, only a sophomore, scored 10 of her team-high 12 points in the first quarter to help the visitors build an 18-6 lead after one period and they cruised to a 49-25 victory over Skyline in an SEC Red matchup.

Lauren DeWolf had 11 points and played a solid game running the offense and moving the ball around to her teammates. Felicia Stewart scored eight and Suszie Atkins scored 6 for the winners.

Pioneer improved to 6-2 and face a very good Saline team on Friday in a big SEC Red showdown at Pioneer.

Janee Faulkner, who played a strong game for the Eagles, led the home team with 14 points. Ava Victory added five for Skyline.

Pioneer guards DeWolf, Mya Hicks and Brein Bogan all fed the ball inside to Clark early in the game and she seemed to finish every time she got near the basket. She scored inside to make it 6-2 and again scored to make it 10-2. Her basket again inside pushed Pioneer’s lead to 12-4 with 3:30 left in the opening quarter.

Victory hit a long shot from the wing to cut the lead to 12-6. But Stewart hit a shot to make it 14-6 and then banked in a triple at the buzzer to send the Pioneers to an 18-6 lead after the first period.

Victory got the Eagles going in the second with a triple from the corner to cut the lead to 18-9. But it was the last time the deficit would be in single digits.

Clark, who else, scored inside to make it 22-11. A three-point play by DeWolf gave the visitors a 25-11 lead and a steal and layup by DeWolf pushed the lead to 29-11.

Pioneer led 30-11 at halftime.

Stewart continued her strong game with a jumper in the third quarter to give Pioneer a 34-13 lead. Faulkner hit a shot for the Eagles to cut the lead to 34-15. Kayla Rollins scored inside to give Pioneer a 39-15 lead.

The Pioneers led 41-15 after three quarters.
