Public invited to participate in Murph Challenge at WCC to raise scholarship funds

ANN ARBOR – The public is invited to participate in the legendary fitness challenge, The Murph Challenge, which Washtenaw Community College’s Wadhams Veterans Center is bringing to Ann Arbor on Memorial Day.

The local event runs from 7 a.m. to noon on Monday, May 30, at The Health & Fitness Center at WCC, one of The Murph Challenge’s official host sites in Michigan.

To complete the challenge, participants must finish a 1-mile run, 100 pullups, 200 pushups, 300 squats and another 1-mile run — all while wearing a 20-pound vest or body armor. (Alternate workouts are available for varying fitness levels.)

The challenge is an official fundraiser for the Lt. Michael P. Murphy Memorial Scholarship Foundation. “Murph,” as he was known, was a Navy SEAL officer who died in combat in Afghanistan in 2005. He was awarded a Purple Heart and the Medal of Honor, the U.S. military’s highest decoration, for his actions in Afghanistan — the first member of the U.S. Navy to receive the award since the Vietnam War.

Register at themurphchallenge.com. Type “Washtenaw” in the “Gym Affiliation” field to quickly search the list of official hosts. As a fundraiser, the challenge has two registration levels: $60 (which includes a t-shirt and hat) or $29.99 (which includes a t-shirt).
