Our headliner Mat Kerekes wears a number of musical hats — he’s the chief vocalist of Toledo-based emo/indie-rock band Citizen, a member of the more pop-oriented group the Flats, and has also released four solo albums over the course of the last five years. Born and raised in southeast Michigan, Mat has been playing music since he was a teenager and issued his self-titled solo debut album when he was in his early twenties. The latest album from Kerekes, “Ruby,” came out earlier this year and received positive reviews across the board. Substream magazine called “Ruby” honest, transparent and reflective, with Atwood magazine praising the album’s vivid and beautiful song lyrics.
Opening Sonic Lunch on August 8th will be singer-songwriter and Ann Arbor native Oren Levin, who’s also a performing arts technology major at the University of Michigan. Levin has been playing gigs in the area for many years as both a solo artist and with a number of other groups, including the Euphorics. A skilled guitarist, vocalist and keyboardist, Oren will be releasing his debut solo album later this year.
Michigan natives Mat Kerekes and Oren Levin will take the stage at Liberty Plaza as one of our final four Sonic Lunch shows in 2019. I look forward to seeing you there! — Martin Bandyke, morning drive host on ann arbor’s 107one.
